“We put cultivation of medicinal plants in an area of over 60 hectares in Hamedan province (Western Iran) on our agenda and two products grown from these farms have been exported to the European countries,” said Milad Zahabi, the managing director of the company.

Noting that his company focuses on the cultivation and production of thyme plant, he said, “35 types of thyme exist in Iran and we have produced 11 types of them for medicinal use.”

Zahabi said that each species of thyme has a specific shape, aroma and taste, adding that some species of this plant are used for food industry because it will not become bitter when exposed to heat and some of its species are used in the pharmaceutical industry.

“We have exported the dried thyme plant produced in the Iranian fields to Oman and Germany,” he stated.

Thyme is an herb from the mint family that you probably recognize from your spice set, but it’s so much more than an afterthought ingredient.

Its range of use is impressive. And according to a 2014 study, it has over 400 subspecies. Thanks to its distinctive taste, thyme has remained a culinary staple to this day. But thyme also boasts a slew of helpful medicinal qualities.
