Iran-Made Silicon Nanocoatings Protect High-Voltage Insulators

TEHRAN (ANA)- Specialists of a knowledge-based company succeeded in producing special silicone nanocoatings for high voltage insulators which protect them from pollution and humidity and increase their lifespan.

“Insulators are made of silicone, glass and ceramic. Silicone insulators have a short lifespan but they are suitable for polluted environments. Ceramic and glass insulators enjoy high strength but they quickly face problems in polluted environments,” said Nayyereh Taqvayee, the managing director of the company.

“In this product, we used the advantage of both parts by creating a silicon nanocoating on the surface of the insulators,” she added.

“The silicone nanocoating with hydrophobic properties protects insulator against harsh environment and pollution, and this coating can remain on the surface of ceramic and glass insulators for years, and even after damage which is caused by power outages, re-coating the insulator is possible,” Taqvayee said.

“We have launched the production line of this product, which has the capacity to produce 300 tons per year,” she noted.

In a relevant development in December, specialists at a knowledge-based company in Iran also used nanotechnology to improve the strength of structures by producing sound and thermal insulation which saves energy up to 90%.

“Elastomeric insulation with thermal, cooling and acoustic properties has been produced as a knowledge-based product by our company for the first time, and its production and formulation processes have been indigenized with the help of elites from the country's top universities,” said Mohammad Hashemi, the managing director of the knowledge-based company.

He added that in addition to reducing energy consumption and noise pollution, insulation made by his company also helps the strength of structures, noting, “The insulation prevents corrosion, and therefore the need for repair and maintenance of pipes is reduced and their lifespan increases.”

“This product has resulted in 65% to 90% energy saving which varies due to the effects of various factors like environmental conditions, insulation thickness, etc.,” Hashemi said.
