Iran-Made Protein Skimmer Filtration System Capable of Cleaning Up Fish Farms

TEHRAN (ANA)- An Iranian expert succeeded in producing a protein skimmer filtration system that is used to clean up fish farms from protein remains.

Abdolmajid Mousavi, who holds a Ph.D. in aquaculture, told ANA that protein skimmer filtration systems remove mechanically the dissolved organics, proteins, fish food remains, and tints from the water.

They work by injecting bubbles into the water, which attract proteins and other amino acids found in decomposing organic matter, he added.

With the low rate of water exchange in fish farms, it was necessary to use such a system to remove protein pollutants from water, Mousavi noted.

The water output from a fish farm is approximately one-tenth of a liter per second, and 10 liters of water per second are needed to produce each ton of fish.

“So, we need 100 liters of water per second to grow fish in a pond. However, due to water shortage problems and the need for saving water, we reduced the water consumption by one-tenth of a percent, saving water consumption by about 99.5 percent.”

One of the main problems in fish farms is that proteins that are excreted from the excess food and excrement of the fish cause the formation of foam on the surface of the water and reduce the breeding quality.

The protein skimmer filtration system reduces the amount of foam on the water surface and removes the protein from the water, Mousavi pointed out.

The initial designs of the system were prepared and compared with similar foreign samples, he said, adding that with the formation of an expert team, the protein skimmer system was produced.

The system receives the water using pumps and by strongly aerating the water, it causes the protein in the water to be foamed on the surface of the system.

In response to the question of whether there is a foreign or domestic equivalent for the protein skimmer in the market, Mousavi said there are rival systems in the market.

But due to the high volume of work and in order to optimize the volume of incoming water and the amount of aeration, some initiatives were taken by expert colleagues to improve the efficiency of the system.

Manufacturing the system saves buying costs by 90 percent, although the system existing in the market does not have the desired performance.

So, some changes have been made in the system to make it significantly optimized, Mousavi concluded.
