Iranian Researcher Produces Pharmaceutical Compounds for PET Imaging

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers produced over five new effective pharmaceutical compounds, specially the Trudate compound, which is used for PET (positron emission tomography) scanning of the patients with Parkinson's disease.

“This project is related to the design and synthesis of bi-functional compounds and using the capability of this group of compounds in the synthesis of organic molecules,” Saeed Belalayee, a professor of organic chemistry at Khajeh Nasir Toosi University in Tehran, told ANA.

“By using this know-how, we have been able to prepare more than five effective medicinal substances that are used in PET imaging,” he added.

“Presenting new solutions in the synthesis of organic compounds can always be transformative and the know-how gained in this field makes it possible to prepare a large number of organic compounds, specially effective medicinal substances with high added value,” Belalayee said.

PET scan is an imaging test that uses radioactive material to diagnose a variety of diseases. Doctors use it to find tumors, diagnose heart disease, brain disorders and other conditions.

PET scanners can incorporate a computed tomography scanner (CT) and are known as PET-CT scanners. PET scan images can be reconstructed using a CT scan performed using one scanner during the same session.

One of the disadvantages of a PET scanner is its high initial cost and ongoing operating costs.

PET is both a medical and research tool used in pre-clinical and clinical settings. It is used heavily in the imaging of tumors and the search for metastases within the field of clinical oncology, and for the clinical diagnosis of certain diffuse brain diseases such as those causing various types of dementias.

PET is a valuable research tool to learn and enhance our knowledge of the normal human brain, heart function, and support drug development.
