Iran-Made System Provides Nanoparticles for Industries

TEHRAN (ANA)- A team of researchers at the University of Tehran made a system that is able to produce nanoparticles needed for the cosmetics, health, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

The ultrasonic nano-homogenizer reactor is a system for the homogenization of mixtures in the liquid phase in order to be used in the cosmetics, health, food, and pharmaceutical industries.

Mohammad-Mehdi Uchi, a Ph.D. graduate of nanotechnology from the University of Tehran, said that the project started in 2018.

“We designed a system that can produce nanoparticles in the liquid phase in a semi-industrial volume.”

He added that liquid nanoparticles are produced by homogenizers for use in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and dyeing.

With 27,000 round-per-minute speed inside a steel reactor, the system can homogenously convert particles into other micrometers, he noted.

“Using an ultrasonic device, it breaks the particles obtained in the micrometer size and reduces them to the nanometer size.”

Pointing out that the system is equipped with two "vacuum" and "pressure" systems, Uchi said, “We pull the material into the reactor with the help of a vacuum system, and once the material enters the reactor, the homogenization process is applied to the material.”

At the end of the process, with the help of two pressure systems, the sample passes through nanometer filters and finally, the product will be manufactured, he highlighted.

Uchi went on to say that another advantage of the system is that it simultaneously has a control system for temperature, cooling, and heating.

“This issue has made the whole process in the system be done at a constant temperature.”

Homogenization is commonly defined as a chemical or physical treatment by which the composition or structure of a substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or a mixture of substances is made uniform.

Homogenization is an essential unit operation during the manufacture of a number of food and dairy products.

As a unit operation, homogenization performs multiple functions such as reduction of particle size, dissolution, mixing, dispersion, encapsulation, and emulsification.
