Iranian Researchers Striving to Improve Technical Know-How, Productivity in Mining

TEHRAN (ANA)- Hossein Ali Lazemi, a professor in the mining department of Islamic Azad University’s Bafq branch, and his colleagues have made a research group to improve the technical know-how and increase the productivity in the mining sector.

Lazemi, who has a master's in rock mechanics field from Amirkabir University and a PhD in this field from the science and research branch of Islamic Azad University, has over 24 years of executive, educational and research experiences in the mining sector.

“Nowadays, due to the industries' need to raw materials and the high volume of mineral extraction, mining in different geological conditions and at different depths is inevitable; therefore, it is important and necessary to know the behavior of the earth in order to find an optimal and safe extraction method,” Lazemi told ANA.

“Our research group can provide the basis for improving the technical know-how of open pit and underground mining and play an important role in increasing productivity and safe mining,” he added.

“In order to understand the behavior of the earth in structures, behavioral graph tools and equipment are needed, and we can indigenize building such equipment by research work. Therefore, the main field of our activity is focused on technical know-how and making equipment which help to understand the behavior of the earth,” Lazemi said.

In a relevant development earlier this year, a researcher at Amirkabir University of Technology (AUT) developed a new method to significantly reduce mining exploration costs.

Adel Shirazi, a graduate from the AUT and the chief executor of the post-doctoral project "Advanced Integrated Exploratory Investigations ", told Iranian media that reducing exploration costs through a more accurate, quicker and less costly method was the main aim of his project.

“This project significantly reduced exploration costs and updated many traditional methods using artificial intelligence. It presented a new algorithm for the exploration of areas that can have mineral deposits. The method can be used in other places around the world,” he said, adding that he published scientific articles and also produced a software in the field of geophysics out of the project.

The AUT researcher further asserted that if his method is carried out it can practically reduce the overall exploration costs by 80%.
