Iranian Agriculture Minister Javad Sadatinejad said that the country’s total production of wheat, barley and corn rose to 20.3 million metric tons (mt) in the year to August 22 which shows a 13.5% rise compared to the same period last year.

He added that Iran’s production of barley and animal feed corn had increased by 30% and 18%, respectively, in the same period, noting that the country’s rice production rose by 25% over the same period while wheat purchases from domestic famers increased by 55%.

Sadatinejad also stated that the agricultural exports from Iran hit historic highs in the year to August, adding that vegetable exports had risen by 20% over the period to reach a total of $1.2 billion in value terms.

He added that Iran is now a major supplier of agricultural products to other countries, saying that apple and chicken exports to Iraq and Pakistan have risen in recent months while Iran has been able to launch exports of four agrifood products to China despite US restrictions on trade with the rest of the world.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations had announced earlier this year that it expected Iran’s total cereal production to increase by 13.5% in 2022 compared with last year to reach 20.3 million tons.

The new report put Iran’s five-year average annual production at 21 million tons. Production in 2021 was estimated at 17.9 million tons.
