A ball mill, also known as pebble mill or tumbling mill, is a milling machine that consists of a hollow cylinder containing balls mounted on a metallic frame such that it can be rotated along its longitudinal axis.

Ball mills are commonly used for crushing and grinding materials into an extremely fine form.

Mohammad Reza Barekatin, the managing director of Tamkar Industrial Group, told ANA that designing and building the ball mill, which is of high importance in the mining industry for crushing all kinds of minerals (such as iron, silica, lime, copper, lead, zinc, cement, stone powder, and glass), the country became self-sufficient in this regard.

The domestic production of the large machinery will prevent the outflow of foreign currency, create jobs for specialists in the fields of design, production, and technology, and development of knowledge-based products, he added.

Barekatin pointed out that a problem that existed in the foreign model of the product made us design and build the ball mill.

“After solving the problem, we decided to build the domestic model by relying on Iranian knowledge and strength.”

The nanostructure size can be varied by varying the number and size of balls, the material used for the balls, the material used for the surface of the cylinder, the rotation speed, and the choice of material to be milled.

For manufacturing the huge industrial machinery weighing 120 tons with a length of 12 meters and a diameter of 6.5 meters, a lot of research was done with the participation of Malek Ashtar University, he noted.

Building the large structure required steps, and implementing each was considered a big project, he highlighted.

Considering that the sheets used in this project could not be imported due to the sanctions, the company decided to produce the sheets in cooperation with large domestic steel companies, Barekatin added.

Along with carrying out the project, the industrial group managed to fix the defects of existing foreign samples, he said, adding that the problems stopped the production line about once every two weeks.

Barekatin went on to say that importing each ball mill shell cost about 600,000 euros, including transportation costs, while the domestically made sample has the same quality, made at half the foreign price with a much lower transportation cost.

The company started its activity in 1981 with the aim of manufacturing industrial parts. By expanding its activities, it has become an industrial group consisting of 17 companies in steel, water and energy, oil, gas, petrochemicals, and mining sectors, he concluded.
