Iran Makes Sensors to Monitor Movement of Earth's Crust

TEHRAN (ANA)- Iranian researchers at a technological firms stationed at Khajeh Nasir al-Din Toosi University of Technology (KNTU) produced and commercialized sensors for monitoring the earth's crust in a bid to manage crises in earthquake-prone areas.

Monitoring systems based on positioning and navigation systems are one of the most state-of-the-art systems used to monitor the movements of the earth's crust and the atmosphere, and therefore, one of the technological companies of KNTU made such sensors which can be applied in the crisis management systems.

The knowledge-based product, which has reached the commercialization stage with the support of the Headquarters for Development of Space Technologies and Smart Transportation of the Iranian Vice-Presidency for Science, Technology and Knowledge-Based Economy, makes possible using these systems in any weather conditions and monitoring the movements of the earth's crust in short-time intervals with high measurement accuracy.

Monitoring systems based on the data of satellite navigation and positioning systems consist of four parts, including sensors, data transmission telecommunication platform, monitoring center and warning part.

Iran experiences frequent seismic activity as it sits where two major tectonic plates meet.

The earthquakes have sometimes turned disastrous over the past years. In 2003, more than 26,000 people lost their lives following a major quake that ruined the ancient city of Bam in Eastern Iran. In 1990, a 7.4-magnitude quake in Northern Iran killed thousands of people.

At least two other significant quakes struck in 2005 and 2012, which killed a total of about 1,000 people.
