“The license plate-recognition camera is the main product of our company and we worked on it for nearly three years, and its hardware and software were designed and developed by the experts of our knowledge-based company,” Ali Mahjour, the managing director of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.

“The license plate-recognition camera has so far been installed on North-Tehran freeway, and Tehran municipality and Karaj municipality are also using it,” he added.

Mahjour described recognition accuracy of over 98%, coverage of four lanes, operation in conditions of congestion and high traffic, embedded processor, no need for a separate computer, sending traffic information in real time, web user interface, reporting with functional filters and camera settings through the interface as the important features of the camera.

“License plate-recognition camera, error-free traffic counter system, new generation IBCM of car, new generation of Telematics Boc of car and monitoring and reporting system of temperature and humidity of inner and outer city roads are among the products of this company,” he underlined.

Earlier, in October, another knowledge-based company in Iran had also succeeded in designing an image-to-text character recognition system for scanning and reading car license plates with a much higher speed and accuracy than human operators.

“The license plate reader or license plate recognition system (LPR) is an automatic process that takes a photo of the license plate and converts that image into numeric characters to identify the car and send information to the databases,” Aboulfazl Hosseini, a faculty member of Islamic Azad University’s West Tehran branch and the managing-director of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.

He explained that Automated Number Plate Readers (ANPR) are high-speed and computer-controlled camera systems that typically use image-to-text Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to read license plates at a much faster rate than human operators or cameras.

“The license plate reader software can be used in traffic and violation reports to the police, industry, personal security programs and to assess tolls on highways,” Hosseini said.

97.5% accuracy in recognition of license plate, a record of storing 400,000 license plates in the system memory, no need for high processors, easy and convenient use, reporting in Excel and PDF, web user panel (accessible in all browsers on the network), the ability to define the access level for different users, the ability to view the panel on mobile, the ability to automatically command the roadblock and the automatic door, etc. are among the features of the license plate recognition system, he added, noting that the software also records the date and time of entry and exit, having or not having a license, the direction of entry or exit, the name of the car owner, and the camera that stores the license plate.
