Iran-Made System Turns Urban, Industrial Waste into Electricity

TEHRAN (ANA)- An Iranian knowledge-based firm manufactured a system which produces gas as fuel for generating electricity by using the urban and industrial waste.

“This device is actually a plant or power plant that converts municipal waste into clean energy. The device is able to produce electricity from urban and industrial waste,” Massoud Hejrandoust, the managing director of the knowledge-based company, told ANA.

He explained that the urban waste enters the gasification reactor and is then converted into pure synthetic gas, adding that methane and nitrogen synthesis gas are among the outputs of this device with application in the field of clean energy and finally, the heavy hydrocarbons of this gas will be taken and can be used for the power plants.

“The clean energy obtained from this device can be used in power plants and the ash from the device is used for pigments in asphalt. After the waste enters the device's waste depot, its faucets are removed through the drainage process and finally the waste enters the reactors. These faucets are poured inside reactors with a temperature of 500 to 1,000 degrees Celsius and are converted into synthesis gas. Of course, the temperature of the reactors is different based on the type of each waste,” Hejrandoust said.

In a relevant development late in 2022, a knowledge-based company in Iran had achieved the technology to convert oil sludge and waste from urban sewage treatment into usable products and fuel.

Ali Khani, a Ph.D. graduate in applied chemistry-environmental engineering and a faculty member of Islamic Azad University’s Mianeh branch, along with Ali Rasoulzadeh, the founder of the knowledge-based company, are the manufacturers of the multi-functional co-pyrolysis system for recycling all types of urban, industrial and agricultural waste in Iran.

“Our knowledge-based company has succeeded in producing the multifunctional co-pyrolysis device which is used for recycling all types of worthless rejected waste,” Khani told ANA.

The device converts urban, hospital and industrial polymer wastes, including non-recyclable plastic and rubber wastes, into hydrocarbons for diesel fuel and carbon black, greenhouse wastes and agricultural wastes into wood vinegar and biochar, oil sludge resulted from drilling operations, oil transfer and refinery operations into oil derivatives, and sludge from urban sewage treatment and wet urban waste into biochar, he added

Noting that no such technology has existed in Iran so far, Khani said that compared to foreign models, the Iran-made device is more efficient, less pollutant and higher quality and it is capable of multitasking.
