“Navigation in surgery means that the device monitors the surgeon and patient's situation with the help of infrared or electromagnetic detectors, and it guides the surgical tools during operation by having images like CT scan and MRI prepared before the operation,” Mostafa Abdolqaffar, the product development manager of the knowledge-based firm, told ANA.

“Navigation is highly helpful in precise operations like brain sampling where the surgeon should reach a small point deep in the brain, or removing objects like pellets from the brain or eye,” he added.

Noting that brain and nerve and ear, nose and throat surgical navigation systems were the first devices developed by the company, Abdolqaffar said, “If the hospital has not purchased the device, it is possible to rent it at the request of the doctor. In this situation, the images of the patient are sent and the device is provided to the surgeon on the day of the operation.”

He also said that development of the orthopedic surgery navigator device is in the final stages of clinical trial in the company, adding that manufacturing a device for lung and liver surgeries is also in the research stage.

Surgical navigation technology allows surgeons to precisely track instrument positions and then project the instrument position onto the preoperative imaging data. This sophisticated technology is often compared to GPS tracking, which allows travelers to see their position on a map.

The equipment for surgical navigation includes a computer workstation, plus hardware for tracking the position of instruments. Although optical and electromagnetic tracking is available, most sinus surgeons prefer electromagnetic tracking.
