Iranian Company Invents New Method for Desalination of Brackish Water

TEHRAN (ANA)- A knowledge-based company in Iran managed to manufacture a device by using the electric exploding wire method, describing it as a new method for desalination of brackish water.

“The PNC1k-D device produces metal nanocolloids by using the electric exploding wire method on a laboratory scale,” Bahareh Kavani, the managing-director of the company stationed at the incubator center of Islamic Azad University’s Roudehen branch, told ANA.

“In this process, ionic impurities are removed from the aqueous solution based on an electrochemical technique and in the presence of anionic and cationic membranes,” she added.

Kavani explained that desalination of salty water with 95% and 85% efficiency, performance at pressure of 1 bar and ambient temperature, less energy consumption compared to other desalination methods, no need for pre-treatment and chemical supplements during the process, ability to adjust the output EC amount, membrane life span of more than five years, low operating cost and easy operation, arsenic removal device with card reader and plasma nanocolloid generator are the features of the exploding wire device.

In a relevant development, another knowledge-based company in Sistan and Balouchestan province was also able to manufacture a desalination device that converts salty water into fresh water with the help of solar energy.

“Our products which can help the settlement of water shortage problem in Sistan and Balouchestan province (in Southeastern Iran) is the solar water desalination device,” said Mohammad Moghaddam, the head of the board of directors of the knowledge-based company stationed at Sistan and Balouchestan’s Science and Technology Park.

“The device can purify water and it turns the saltiest waters like sea water or any kind of polluted water into fresh water and even removes the microbial contamination of these waters. In addition, it does not have any special complications and does not need to be repaired for a long time. Meantime, due to the small space it occupies (half a square meter), it can be easily used and installed in all spaces,” he explained.

Moghaddam added that the Iran-made solar water desalination device produces less wastewater than imported samples, noting that the imported water desalination devices produce four liters of wastewater to produce one liter of fresh water which causes damage to the environment and increases the level of salty surface waters while in the Iranian model all salty water is purified and no effluent remains.
